Visual solutions focused on
Research
For scientists and academics,
focusing on high-quality visual representation of complex concepts.
You can contact me for an online meeting to get feedback about the format and design of e.g. paper figures, presentations, etc. Also, we can also talk about your next scicomm activity, experiences as (graduate) student, or advices to apply to scholarships abroad:
- Counseling service. 1 hour of online meeting focused on improving the work you want to review together. Does not include additional material.
- Curation. In addition to counseling service, I send you a suggestion document descriptions. The price will depend on your progress status and how deep you would like I dive in your work feedback document.
I can support on your graphical abstract, figure and graphs:
- Figure review and upgrade. If my Curation service wouldn’t be enough for you, I can enter to your editable file to create an upgrated version. This additional review can include accesibility corrections, composition improvements, and technical check for submission.
- Figure design and illustration. If you want to create a figure or diagram and have issues to design, I can do it for you. We can meet to discuss how you want to show your results, and together we can create an atractive figure for your papers and further presentations.
This service contains several opportunities to meet and get feedback together than previous service descriptions. - Graphical abstract. I can illustrate and design your next graphical abstract, which comprises your research overview, and main elements separated for further use.

Similar to figures’ support, but focused to bring your research in visual format for poster or oral presentations.
- Design review and upgrade. After online meeting, I dive into the editable file to create an upgrated version. This review can include accesibility corrections, composition and visual narrative improvements, and technical check for printing or projection.
- Presentation design. We can check your preliminary presentation design together to improve it. This service includes meeting with you to design your visual storyline and general composition to make you feel more secure during your presentation and keep the atention of the audience. This does not include feedback regarding your on stage performance.
- Poster design. In contrast to the Design review and upgrade service, we meet to discuss first composition ideas, then I can design it with your feedback, and leave it ready to print! The design is curated and focused to make you feel more secure during the presentation and atract the audience to your poster.
By default, you need to have your texts and figures prepared for these services, at least a preliminary version as a basis to work together. Nevertheless, you can complement with Figure design and illustration (from Figures’ support) if you want that I draw figures in your presentation. In addition, I can prepare layouts for presentations you and your research group can use as template.
You can get the opportunity to learn about visual creation focused on research and outreach. For the moment, I am able to held the following workshops:
- Visual resources for researchers. This three hours workshop explores the basics of design applied on figure used in papers, including composition, accesibility, recommended software, and formating. During the sessions, we will have exercises to undertand and integrate these contents.
- Poster design. From the idea to the printing, learn theory and practice of designing poster to be shared with peers and colleages.
The compact version is composed by two blocks of one and half hour each, for theory overview and poster progress feedback, respectively. The extended version includes an additional hour during the theory session, with practice exercises to integrate deeper the concepts. - How to design your first scicomm product? A basic workshop to give the first insights and tools to design your first scicomm product.
The half day workshop covers the main pipeline to bring your idea to life! We will explore the basics of drawing, composition, language, accesibility, and possible visual product formats, including illustrations for social media, comic, and mural. - Fanzine to share your research. Let’s learn about scicomm, the history and importance of fanzines as a tool to democratize knowledge, including scientific research. The workshop includes a theory and practical session, which outcome will be your own fanzine ready to copy and spread your research!
By default, the workshops are designed -but not limited- for 10 people in beginner level. This to have enough time to get a personalized and close interaction during the activities.
You can collaborate for your next open event and increase the interest of the broader audience.
- Cocreation of scicomm project. This services includes the design and production of your scicomm project, which can include a presentation, workshop, exhibition, book, mural, or something else you have on mind. I can also prepare illustrations, comics and short articles for social media and other digital formats.
- Held a talk or presentation. I’m available to participate in open events with talks about microbiology, science and art, human and/or microbial diversity. Exemplary talks are “(bio)diversity matters” (English, USA) and “science and art with identity” (Spanish, Chile).
- Workshops. I can also join your event to perform a workshop to open audience. Examples are “Painting with microbes”, where we use microbes to paint like watercolours; and “Drawing microbes” to explore the microbial world using a microscope for the phone and learn the basics to draw them. Other workshops available with Garabatos are described in the tab OUTREACH.
Other possible services are:
- Logo design for your research group or project, to be used in digital and printed formats.
- Visual identity, with guidelines for the overall image and visual profile.
- Templatesfor Canva, Microsoft Office or related software.
- Graphic recording of your event or meeting (work in progress).
- Website WordPress-based, like this one (basic level, still learning).
- Social media, including the management and preparation of entries for your research-related account in English or Spanish (work in progress).

I’m available to meet us and discuss about how to improve the experience in class by integrating visual elements or held nonformal education events. In addition, I can format your presentations or guides to have a more atractive and uniform style.

Garabatos Atelier is a Queer Feminist Collective and Art Studio in Bremen.
We are currently 4 queer people (and one dog) with different backgrounds and areas of focus, but the common desire to build and share a safer space for our artistic work. With them, I have the space for exploration of new products formats and learn about new art techniques. Among others, you can find:
- Products. By donation, you can get different products, from postcards, to screenprints, fanzines, and more!
- Workshops. Open events that can be applied in outreach events, like printing using tetrapacks, lino- and screenprint.
- Garabatos móvil. The mobile station for printing can be an atractive instalation to engage with people while printing together.

Previous collaborations
Former works in Chile, Germany and beyond
Previously, I’ve work together with different research groups and inniciatives in Chile, Germany and other countries.
For instance, the I collaborated in the following projects:
- Live drawing at celebration of the 50th year anniversary of Aade research Vessel, at the Biologischen Anstalt Helgoland (BAH), Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research, Germany.
- Mural wall that summarized the research of the Molecular Ecology Working group, part of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology Bremen, Germany.
- Microbial map of Chile created with the Chilean Network of Microbial Ecology (RECHEM), that comprises a series of illustrations of exemplary species firstly described in Chile and contextualized in a country map.
- Graphical abstracts for Kirstein et al., 2016, Int-Veen et al., 2021, and the figures for my PhD thesis and publications, such as Garin-Fernandez, 2018.
How are the prices fixed?
The offered services are tailored to meet individual client needs. The price of my services depends on the complexity of the job, invested hours, urgency, and materials needed. Each service includes a fixed number of meetings and modifications to ensure you’ll receive a high-quality product that meets your needs. Extra meetings or corrections have an additional cost.
Notwithstanding the above, I’ve limited places with differential prices for people from the global south, or part of a marginalized group from the Academia.
