Model microorganisms

Drawing from 2018

Model organisms are well known organisms used to compare and test hypothesis to understand biology. We have plants as Arabidopsis, insects as Drosophila melanogaster (common fruit fly or vinegar fly), zebra fish, etc. Microorganisms are not exception, and there are model phages used to describe their proliferation cycle and relation with the host.

Model T phages are extensively studied species, in terms of deep characterization of their genes and genetic material, morphology and their relationship with their host. The main models are T7 (Podovirus), T4 (Myovirus), T1 and T5  (Siphoviruses), all of them can infect the bacteria Escherichia coli. They’re crucial in microbiology and scientific studies, such important models! 😎🔬
